Our Founding Story
Japa Mala Beads was started in 2004 with five unique mala designs by founder Timothy Burgin. Frustrated with the lack of options available locally and online, Timothy decided to create his own mala beads. Delighted with his creations, he embarked on a mission to share his newly found craft with others. By October 2005, our collection had expanded to 13 unique gemstone designs, and we began importing traditional malas from India and Nepal. Since then, we have continued to grow and expand our line of mala beads and we now have over 100 different malas available!

At our little mala studio in Asheville, NC, we take immense pride in handcrafting each mala bead with the utmost care and attention to detail. Our malas are made from the finest quality semi-precious gemstones, hand-carved bone, sacred woods, and eco-friendly hemp tassels. Each mala is purified and blessed before it reaches you, ensuring that it carries a positive and serene energy.
Authenticity and Tradition
We honor the traditional designs of yoga, Buddhist, and Tibetan prayer beads, incorporating the essential elements such as tassels, guru (teacher) or meru (mountain) beads, and 108 counting beads. Our malas are thoughtfully designed to enhance your mantra meditation practice and support your spiritual journey.
Global Sourcing with Integrity
In addition to our handcrafted gemstone malas, we import authentic Hindu and Buddhist prayer beads from India and Nepal. We ensure that all our imported beads are made from traditional and sacred materials like sandalwood, rosewood, tulsi, ebony, turmeric, and rudraksha. We source our mala beads from over 35 vendors, from all around the globe. We love finding new and unique beads to craft beautiful and potent malas from. Our commitment to authenticity and quality means that you can trust the integrity of every mala bead you purchase from us.
Eco-Friendly Practices
We are committed to running our business with minimal impact on the environment. Our handcrafted tassels are made from eco-friendly hemp, our packaging is 100% recyclable, we have solar panels on our roof, and our website’s server is powered by renewable energy.
